Week of Oct.5 - Oct.9

It's going to be a great week for us here in Kindergarten! Here we go!

Monday - For this week we will have a unit on leaves. Our Word Wall Words are orange and can. (Homework Assignment Sheet #5 will come home today.) We'll be making books on different leaves and their colors and things that are orange. We will take a "Leaf Walk" around school to explore leaves and colors in our surroundings. In Math will be working on addition and subtraction, graphing the colors of Fall, and introducing ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and so on). This doesn't even include Calendar Time and whole group lessons! Your children will have a lot of things to share with you this week. Just wait for the pumpkin unit! It's coming up next!

Tuesday - Congratulations to all of our compliments and good behavior and work habits! We filled our treat jar. After voting, we decided to bring a stuffed animal to school to help with our work. Also, our class will be visiting the Book Fair to make our Wish Lists. Look for those in your child's red folder today.

Wednesday - I'll be taking my class to the computer lab for a whole group lesson on iStation. Learn all about iStation at Literacy Night tomorrow night!

Thursday - Lunch with Loved Ones - come have lunch with your child and then go shopping at the Book Fair. Literacy Night from 6:00pm to 7:00pm will be here at Spears! This is a very important meeting the Kinder team has planned. Our reading specialist, Beth Henderson, will be there to discuss the new assessment program called iStation being implemented in FISD starting this year. We will also address all questions about Guided Reading. This is an effort to answer your reading questions so that we have more time at conferences to discuss other information with you.

Friday - Today we will wrap up our unit on leaves. Miss Bobbie, our Frisco High student, will be here to help with a science experiment. Each child will have a handout called My Leaf to record their findings. Look for this handout in their red folder so you can ask them questions about the experiment. Hopefully we'll have some time at the end of the day to meet up with our Book Buddies!

A few reminders:
* We have started collecting Box Tops! Send them in so we can win the PTA prize!
* Each child is bringing home a chart tablet titled Morning Messages. I wanted you to see some of our messages we read and write together during Calendar Time. Some of the pages I tear out and display in the classroom so the students can learn to use them as references when working independently. You can write a message to our class on the last page. Just wanted to share some of what we do together during the day!
* No book orders this month because of Book Fair.
* Class directory is coming home soon. My Room Moms are working very hard on this!
* If you haven't done so already, please send in the Conference Questionnaire. As I prepare for our time together I want to make sure we get the most out of our meeting.

Thank you so much for taking time to read and keep up with my blog! This is a big transition from weekly e-mails and updates I know. We are finding that blogging is helping us individualize news more. It's also keeping e-mails and phone calls to a minimum so we can spend more time planning and working with the children. We appreciate your support as the teachers make this transition too!
